There are a lot of things that are consistent about the character of Chris "Jesus" Ferguson. He wears black, most noticeably his large black cowboy hat, his sunglasses, he always tents his hands in front of his face before making a decision, and he has long hair and a beard. Oh, and he wins, a lot. |
The World Series of Poker Circuit train keeps on going, and right now it is in station at the Harrah’s casino in New Orleans, Louisiana. This marks the fourth year in a row that the WSOP has come to Harrah’s New Orleans for a Circuit stop. |
The World Series of Poker goodness continues this month with a WSOP Circuit event taking place on Thursday, November 08, 2007 and running through Sunday, November 18, 2007. |
The next World Series of Poker Circuit event is coming to the Caesars casino in Indiana from Wednesday, October 17, 2007 to Friday, November 02, 2007, and poker players will have 13 events to chose from, with buy ins ranging from $300 to $5,000 for the championship event. |
The World Series of Poker Europe was a period on any sentence that talks about how the Internet has changed the sport. Before today Annette "Annette_15" Obrestad had the glorious distinction of being the best multi-table tournament player that the internet has to offer. In certain snobbish corners of the sport, the "poker elite" behave as if being the best tournament player in cyberspace is the equivalent of being the best race car driver in Hazzard County. |
It was about two in the afternoon (British Time) when the evil was exorcised from the gaming floor at the World Series of Poker Europe. It was at this time that Phil Hellmuth was eliminated from competition. Usually when really bad things are killed off it takes an exploding death star or a farm house from Kansas falling on malevolent character to keep them down. In this case all it took was a short stacked Phil Hellmuth running into a very determined player. |
Isabelle Mercier was eliminated with extreme prejudice when her pair of sixes failed to hold up against Tong G’s full house. During the previous hand Isabelle had the opportunity to eliminate Tony. She had him lined up for the kill with a pair of Queens when all he was holding was a suited A-K. During the hand her bravado got the best of her, and she took the opportunity to stick it to her flailing opponent. |
The sixth day didn’t end with a bang - it was more like a flushing sound. Day 2A of the World Series of Poker Europe Main Event concluded with a pair of last minute eliminations. Pat Scanlan ended Ian Munns tournament on the very last hand of the night while Gus Hansen took out Chris Bjorin in a hand that had all the excitement and energy of a Bob Newhart running the 40 yard dash. |
On Monday Phil Hellmuth arrived in grand fashion atop a double decker bus. Phil is a legend, a bit of a knob, but a legend nonetheless. His entrance was as big as his presence in the sport. On Day 1B Doyle Brunson’s exit was far less grand and in direct contrast to man who surpassed him as the most decorated player in World Series of Poker history. |
The first event at the World Series of Poker Europe was won by a guy from Germany. Today an Italian was crowned the champion of Event 2. The last time folks from these two nations dominated a European struggle, well... really bad things happened. Seeing as neither of these winners has dreams of world domination or a tasteless little mustache, we think the EU you are safe. |
Jennifer Harman may not have won any bracelets at the WSOP Europe, but she has had the uncanny knack of somehow being wherever the action was happening. She was a runner up in the first event, and on Day 1A of the Main Event, took out Andy Bloch. |
Today we have crowned the first winner ever at the World Series of Poker Europe. The person who will forever hold this place in history is German poker ace Thomas Bihl. That is the good news, the bad news is that he had to beat Jennifer Harman in a heads up match to secure this place in poker history. |
Usually when a story involves a New Zealander, a German, a Chick from Nevada, and Jesus it is the start of the sort of joke that one commonly finds written on the walls of the men’s room of a high school or the DNC headquarters. In the historic first event of the World Series of Poker Europe, this situation described the final four players vying for the first bracelet to ever be awarded outside the Las Vegas borders. |
As of the writing of this column the final table has been set for the first event of the WSOP Europe. Unlike the WSOP proper that boasts dozens of events, the first European branch of this franchise has only three events to speak of. Don’t think of it as small though, we prefer the term "intimate". |
A scanning of the rules is recommended for anyone planning on playing a poker tournament, especially if it is one with such a huge price tag as the World Series of Poker Europe. The main event rings in at about twice that of the regular main event at the WSOP (no E), so an understanding if the rules is imperative. One rule that newcomers might be surprised at involves counting up the money in the pot at any given time. |
Poker has long had an image as a tough-guy game, and it is hard to imagine a bunch of tough guys following a dress code, but such is the case at the World Series of Poker Europe. While players are in no danger of having to don school uniforms or the like, there are certain rules and policies that they have to follow if they want to wear certain items - or more specifically - put certain items on what they wear. |
The highly anticipated World Series of Poker Europe is now underway but registration is not quite done. Early registration has come and gone, and along with it the chance to reserve your seat from the comfort of your home. Now players wishing to take part in the first ever WSOP Europe are going to have to actually be in Europe to register. |
The World Series of Poker isn’t just for Las Vegas poker players anymore, as those poker fans in Mississippi are about to find out. The 2007 WSOP Circuit is kicking off at the end of August with the first of their Circuit series events at the Grand Casino Tunica in Mississippi. |
Many say "Texas Dolly" never did settle for staying in Texas, instead traveling the highways and byways of America looking for juicy poker games. Now Doyle Brunson will be traveling a little further than Las Vegas or Atlantic City in search of the best poker games around as he crosses the ocean to land in London this Autumn to participate in the World Series of Poker Europe, and his online poker room is backing his play. |
September will mark the beginning of the very first World Series of Poker event to take place outside the country of its birth, the United States of America. Presented by BetFair, the WSOP Europe will kick off in London and recent numbers released are putting the prize pool upwards of 7 million GBP. |
It looks like the black-curtained "Sequestrium" that was infamously introduced during the 38th annual World Series of Poker might be a permanent fixture as Harrah’s Entertainment announces "WSOP LIVE", a subscription based service that gets subscribers live web-based tourney coverage at all WSOP final tables. |
This year the winner of the WSOP main event is Jerry Yang, but what about the other final table players - what opportunities will be out there for them? |
The new guy on the block, the man who is supposed to be the face of poker for the next year, got into trouble with his wife for playing poker. Now that, in and of itself, is nothing new - Greg Raymer had to set up a company to fund his poker play to convince his wife that he wasn’t blowing the milk money on his pastime. But take that coupled with Yang being a father of six and emphatically thanking and referring to God during his play, and observers get a sense of something being off the normal path. |
The Next Big Thing for the WSOP is the WSOP Europe, and poker’s biggest names want to be a part of it. The WSOP has maintained its hold on the top position of such organizations for more than thirty years. With their outreach to London for a three event extension of the WSOP, the WSOPE figures on making the news for any player that does well, and some of those that do better than most will be on hand. |
At first it looked like the whole thing might be wrapped up in one shift as two bust outs came in two hours. The chip leader, Philp Hilm, was chopped into twice by Jerry Yang, the first blow rocking his foundation and the second finishing him off. Next the man that the Pros were hoping would win the whole shooting match - Lee Watkinson - was eliminated. |
The World Series of Poker Main Event Champion is 39-year-old psychologist Jerry Yang. This Gen X poker playing machine approached the game in much the same way that the Galactic Empire approached the destruction of Alderaan: cold, professionally dispassionate, and completely devastating. Jerry took the skills that made him a good mental health professional and applied them to the game of poker. |
Jerry Yang is the new face of poker, following the controversy-laden footsteps of Jamie Gold. Last year Gold entered the event a huge chip leader, an advantage that he managed to carry on till the very end. This year three players entered the final table race just about even in chips, making the final table more of a slog for the eventual winner. |
This day was reserved as a rest day before the insanity of the final table begins: a sort of calm before the storm. Having this open day before the final table is, in a sense, like a long pause before the Detroit Tigers’ Gary Sheffield talks about race relations in the game of baseball. |
Today, July 17th, is the day that the poker world has been waiting for, the Main Event final table for the 38th annual World Series of Poker. Nine players will sit down and one will get up eight million dollars richer. He won’t be the only millionaire rising from the table, however, and all players are guaranteed at least half a million for their play in this year’s event. |
Today, July 16th, is a day of rest for the players who will tomorrow take their shot at millions of life changing dollars, as the final table of the 38th annual World Series of Poker takes off. Today Philip Hilm, Tuan Lam, Jon Kalmar, Raymond Rahme, Lee Childs, Lee Watkinson, Hevad "Rain" Khan, Jerry Yang, and Alex Kravchenko will spend time recuperating after their 4am stop time this morning. |
